General

The PWS 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 work very well with heitml. All you need to do is to install heitml after installing the PWS. You might need to uninstall heitml if you did it in the wrong order. The heitml setup program will take care of everything else. For PWS on Windows NT, read the Internet Information Server 2.0/3.0 and 4.0 pages.

PWS 4.0 for Windows 95/98

PWS 4.0 download and installation

For Windows 95, PWS 4.0 is shipped with the Microsoft Windows NT Option Pack 4.0 which can be downloaded from Microsoft's Web site. You need to have installed Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4.01 before you can install PWS 4.0. Get further installation instructions from Microsoft's Web site. For Windows 98, PWS 4.0 is shipped as an add-on with the Windows 98 CD and can be installed through 'Control Panel/Software/Windows-Setup'.

Stop/Start PWS 4.0 on Windows 95/98

If there is a 'Personal Web Server' icon on the taskbar do the following:

  • With the secondary mouse button click the 'Personal Web Server' icon on the taskbar and choose 'Stop Service' from the popup menu.
  • With the secondary mouse button click the 'Personal Web Server' icon on the taskbar and choose 'Start Service' from the popup menu.
If there is no 'Personal Web Server' icon on the taskbar, start the 'Personal Web Manager' from the program group 'Personal Web Server' on Windows 95 or from the program group 'Internet Explorer/Personal Web Server' on Windows 98 and click the 'Stop' or 'Start' button.

Verifying the heitml configuration for PWS 4.0

Verify that the virtual directory /heitml2.0 exists and is mapped onto C:\heitml2.0\htdocs\heitml2.0,,205 where "C:\heitml2.0" is the directory where you installed heitml2.0.
You can do this by starting the 'Personal Web Manager', clicking on the 'Advanced' icon and checking the virtual directory /heitml2.0 for Read and Execute permissions.
You can also use the Windows Explorer to verify this mapping by clicking on the directory C:\heitml2.0\htdocs\heitml2.0, choosing 'Properties' from the 'File' menu and choosing the 'Web Sharing' tab.

PWS 1.0 and 2.0 for Windows 95

PWS 1.0 or 2.0 download and installation

As far as we know the US-English version of PWS can be downloaded for free from the Microsoft Web site. There are also non-English versions of PWS like the German version of PWS available.

Start/Stop PWS 1.0 or 2.0

After Installation of heitml you need to restart the Web server. This works as follows:

  1. Open the Control Panel. Find the 'Personal Web Server' or 'Web-Server' icon and double click on it.
  2. In the 'Properties of Personal Web Server' window, click on the 'Startup' Tab. A message will appear telling you the current state of the Web Server. At this point in time it should say 'The Web Server is stopped.' Click on the 'Start' button and the message will change to 'The Web Server is Running.' Click on OK to close the window. Alternatively, you can choose the 'Services' tab, choose the 'HTTP' service, click the 'End' button, click the 'Start' button and click 'OK' to close the window.
  3. Close the Control Panel Window.

Creating new Virtual Directories

Using the PWS administrative functions you can create new virtual directories that are shown in the WWW. Note that you have to enable execute permission in these directories in order to make heitml work.
